Cosiness

Cosiness is named for what it is trying to do. There is no shouting in this book — the boldest thing in it is a palm grove drawn as a fine engraving, and even that comes in a chalk-on-white colourway that reads almost as texture from across the room. What the collection is really about is surface: troweled plaster, weathered concrete, woven rattan, banded agate, and a linen so convincingly flat you have to stand close to see the weave.

That makes it unusually easy to live with. Thirty-eight of the 74 designs are plains, matched in colour to the prints beside them, so a scheme can be built entirely inside the book — a palm grove on one wall, its plaster in the same green on the other three. The prints themselves stay quiet and considered: ornamental grasses drawn in single lines, wild umbels with butterflies scattered through them, bold cut-out leaf silhouettes, watercolour leaves pressed onto a distressed wall, and an inlaid cube parquet cut in fine grain.

AS Création print in Germany to European standards, and this book is a practical one: every design here is non-woven, pre-pasted, scrubbable or extra-washable, and strippable dry in whole lengths. Non-woven holds its dimensions through a Bangkok wet season and comes off without steam or soaking, which matters as much in a rented condo as in an owned house. Rolls are 10.05 metres by 53 centimetres.
